Belgium 2024: Mustii – Before The Party’s Over

He was the first act to be confirmed all the way back in August 2023. And now 6 months later the wait is finally over, as Belgium have just released their entry for Eurovision 2024. Mustii was chosen internally by RTBF, the Wallonian public service broadcaster, as they have done repeatedly since 2013. Belgium has 2 main broadcasters, a Flemish and a Walloon one, who alternate in selecting a representative for Eurovision. After Gustaph’s success last year for VRT, it was now up to RTBF to pick an artist and song. That artist is Mustii, who will represent them with his song “Before The Party’s Over”.

Belgium at Eurovision

As one of the 7 founding members of the competition in 1956, Belgium have had a long and rich history at the competition. Since their debut, they have only missed out on 3 occasions, in 1994, 1997 and 2001, when they were relegated following poor results the years prior. In 64 attempts, they have only managed to win the contest once, in 1986, making them one of the countries that have been waiting the longest for another victory.

Belgium has hosted the competition once in 1987 following Sandra Kim’s victory the year before with her pop song “J’Aime La Vie”. Sandra sung about being 15 years old and loving life. After the contest however we found out that she was actually only 13. Making her the youngest ever winner of the Eurovision Song Contest. A record that is unlikely to ever be broken, since shortly after the 1986 contest, the EBU imposed an age limit, stating artists had to be 16 or older to be eligible to compete.

Besides winning once, Belgium have reached the top ten 25 times, most recently last year with Gustaph’s entry “Because Of You”. They came second only twice, in 1978 with Jean Vallée and his entry “L’Amour Ça Fait Chanter La Vie” and in 2003 with Urban Trad and their song “Sanomi”. Urban Trad trolled everyone by singing the song in an imaginary language. Something the country would repeat in 2008 with Ishtar’s “O Julissi”.

Barbare Dex Award

In 1993, Flemish singer Barbara Dex represented them with the song “Iemand Als Jij”. The song ended up last that year, but what was more remarkable was the dress that Barbara was wearing. It was her own creation, and was considered so ugly by the press that a Dutch duo decided to start an annual competition called ‘The Barbara Dex Award’. An award given to the worst dressed contestant at Eurovision. Sadly the contest stopped in 2022.

After the introduction of the semi finals in 2004, Belgium struggled for a number of years to score high at the contest. Since 2015, however, they seem to have found a second breath. Loic Nottet’s entry “Rhythm Inside” in 2015 gave Belgium their first top 5 result since 2003, coming fourth. Laura Tesoro reached the top 10 as well the year after, just as Blanche, who also reached 4th place in 2017 with her entry “City Lights”. Belgium have qualified for the final 8 times, and are currently on a 3 year streak.

Belgium 2024

As mentioned above, Belgium alternates between 2 main broadcasters to choose their representative. After VRT’s return of ‘Eurosong’, their national final, it was now RTBF, the Wallonian broadcaster, that had the honor to choose an artist and song. That artist is Mustii, who was chosen internally, as they have done for a number of years. Mustii is a 33 year old actor and singer from Brussels. He has so far starred in 2 films and 2 series such as “The Break” which was a huge success in Wallonia. Mustii has released 2 studio albums so far, both of which entered the top 5. He has also been a reoccurring judge on the Belgian version of the hit reality series “Drag Race Belgique”.

His Eurovision entry “Before The Party’s Over” he says “is about life, which just like a ride at an amusement park, is over in a flash”. He added: “the challenge was to find a song that would create a true narrative and a performance. It tells a story, with a nice progressive edge. And then there is the finale, which we recorded as a choir”: Mustii launched a request on social media a few weeks ago, asking fans to send in their vocals to a snippet of his song. The song was sadly leaked 2 days prior to the official release, by RTBF radio broadcaster ‘Tipik’.

Will Mustii be having a party with us in the final of Eurovision 2024? Or will the party be over for him before Saturday? Find out what we think in our honest but fair reviews below!

niallpoints Review

I have to say that the final minute is my favourite, I’m a big fan of the hook and choir (Hi Tomas), it’s very cinematic, almost like an easy listening Bond theme.

Whether this does well or not relies on really connecting with the audience at home, so staging for this entry is extremely important. Stage this well, and Mustii will reap the rewards.

Early prediction: 5 – 10

I’m deaded. Literally. I had very high expectations for Mustii after RTBF’s announced last August. I started listening to his work and completely fell in love with Mustii. And I can safely say that he did not disappoint me! This song is so so so good! I don’t even have words for how proud I am! I’m obviously biased here, but gosh is that a fabulous entry! His vocals are insane. The choir at the end (which I can proudly say I’m a part of), the strings! The production! The visuals! It’s all just perfection.

This song is made for a big stage! It’s made to be performed live! This will blow the crowd and the juries away, I have no doubt! And I actually get to see him perform it live IN the arena! I’ll die for a second time! Someone order a coffin for me! I don’t wanna jinx anything but I’ve seen some utter the words ‘winner vibes’… Maybe… just maybe… If they play their cards right. If the staging is there. Who knows what can happen?

Early prediction: Top 5
