From Eurovision bon vivant, winning 4 times within the first 15 years of the competition to completely losing all sense of the word “quality” in the noughties, France has had an extraordinary Eurovision journey. Since Amir’s success at the 2016 edition however, the home country of Marie Myriam seems to have found a second life. One quality act following another, they gave us some of the most iconic performances on the Eurovision stage of the last 5 years, with Barbara Pravi and her touching rendition of Voilà almost securing them their 6th victory.

France is one of the 7 founding members of the competition all the way back in 1956, having won 5 times in total so far. The country has participated no less than 65 times, thus only missing out on 2 occasions. Along with the UK, Spain, Germany and Italy, they are part of the “Big Five”, securing them an annual automatic ticket to the final, as these countries are the largest financial contributors to the EBU (European Broadcasting Union).

This year France is coming back with vocal power house Slimane, winner of the French version of the popular reality show The Voice, with his song “Mon Amour”. Will he belt his way into the top 10? Or will he crumble and fall? Find out what we think below in our honest but fair reviews. As a little bonus for you, we have added our bold and totally unbased early predictions!

Slimane has an absolutely incredible voice which carries throughout the entire track, unfortunately, I just haven’t been able to gel with the song as a whole. I think this one may be a grower for me, or one that I have to see live before it can make any real impact on me – it seems a bit ballad by numbers.

Early prediction: 12-16

France has started the competition off strong! There is a vision here, a direction. I like the intimacy of the music video which I’m sure they can recreate in Malmö. We have a strong vocal and a personality that shines through. The song sticks. In no universe will this not end up in the juries top 10. Slight warning: they ought to be careful not to copy Barbara Pravi too much… But all in all I’m expecting a class act from France

Early prediction: 8-12
