Czechia 2024: Aiko – Pedestal

Czechia, formerly known as the Czech Republic, has so far had a short but interesting trajectory at the Eurovision Song Contest. While not always having been successful in their attempts, in just 11 participations, the country has managed to produce 2 top 10 placements and a bronze and silver medal at the Semi Finals in 2018 and 2019 respectively, along with some fan favourites like “Lights Off” by We Are Domi.

Czechia had a 5 year long hiatus from the competition following poor results prior to 2009, failing to qualify for the Final in their first 3 attempts, including the all too infamous ‘nil points’ (not to be confused with niallpoints) in the 2009 Semi Final, resulting in a last place. The catchy dance track “Lie To Me” by Mikolas Josef is their top result so far, placing 6th at the Grand Final in 2018. Last year saw the country secure their second ever top 10 finish thanks to another fan favourite Vesna and their anthemic “My Sisters Crown”.

Like many delegations before them Czechia have found their inspiration for this years entrant in a former talent show competitor. Aiko is a 24 year old singer songwriter currently based in Brighton, England. She will represent her country with the energetic pop-rock song “Pedestal”. Will the public put her on a pedestal in Malmö or will she tumble off stage?

You can read what we think below in our honest but fair reviews. As with France, we have added our bold but totally unbased early predictions.

niallpoints review

This track takes me back to my teenage years, head banging to Paramore but with a real modern feel. Like most, I was not convinced by the ESCZ performance but wow, the studio version is absolutely perfect for me. Aiko brings the pop with a sprinkling of punk and rock characteristics to make this really stand out. With lots of time to perfect the performance before Malmö – this is going to go off in the arena.

Early prediction: 12-16

I absolutely love the vibe of this song. It’s fast, brutal and energetic. Studio cut this could easily be in my top 10. In theory this should do rather well. Unfortunately I saw the live performance and I was not impressed to say the least. Plenty of time to perfect it though. We’ve seen a drastic improvement last year so why not this year? They’ll need to go all out: only 2.30 minutes to convince the audience!

Early prediction: 14-18
